Rita Coolidge 1977 Higher And Higher
This song brings back so many memories. I grew up in Moore, the Smile America City (the town theme for at that time). On Friday and Saturday nights, along about dusk, the high school kids (and kids in their early 20s)....yes, that would be Moore High School, the only high school in Moore in the 70s....that had licenses and cars or friends that had licenses and cars headed out to cruise 12th street to park, drink, dope, and chat with all their friends and aquaintances. Well, my sister and I were no different---except that I wasn't much of a doper or drinker back then (still not a doper but don't mind my drink)---we loved cruising 12th street. You know, we were going to meet the man of our dreams, NO! Don't laugh, I am serious. Our high school had 3 classes with about 700 - 900 kids in each class, we were the largest high school in the state of Oklahoma at that time....again, that is in the 70s....and your chance of meeting Mr. Right in class was pretty slim and getting to meet him on campus was even slimmer with so many options to choose from. This reminds me of a quote I once read on Facebook and I am going to make it apply to Moore High School instead of the original school it referred to. Looking for boys in junior high was like shopping at WalMart but, looking for boys at Moore High School was like shopping at the Mall. Seriously, there were sooooooooooooooo many guys and, well, at school, some of us were a little bit shy but, out on 12th street under the cover of street lamps with a few rounds in us (for me, that was usually coke and cherry vodka), we were a bit braver and would talk to, wave at, honk at, and follow any cute guy that would do the same back. WE HAD A BLAST. Again, this song by Rita Coolidge, Higher and Higher, brings back so many fun memories. Of those fun memories are the memories of my sister and I getting ready to go cruise 12th street. Oh, god! We loved it, we would get in trouble every weekend for breaking curfew. My daddy had a pretty hot truck with mag wheels and headers, we made many a boy jealous with our spinouts and revving the engine to get their attention. Those were the days. And, again, when this song would come on the radio, we would jack the sound up and sing at the top of our voices (ummmm, back in the good ole days before iPods and mp3 players---oh, and country and western was one of the hot sounds). Yeah, I am feeling pretty melancholy. I have been taking quite a few trips down memory lane and I am so lucky to have so many lanes to travel down. THANK YOU, RITA COOLIDGE AND YOUTUBE FOR THIS TRIP.
